Klaww Skip and Low Eco: Difference between pages

Line 1: Line 1:
Klaww Skip is a skip used in most speedrun categories to bypass the boss fight with Klaww and continue into Mountain Pass.
Low eco is a speedrun category in Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy that restricts the player to using the lowest possible amount of eco needed to completed the game.

Methods
The Low Eco category is known for its utilization of difficult and unorthodox strategies and techniques that aren't found in any other category. It scrutinizes the runner's true knowledge of the game and puts their abilities to the test.

Lava Walk
Rules
By ledge grabbing the stone platform in the middle of the boss fight, Jak is able to clip into the lava without dying. Jak can then let go of the ledge and walk through the lava. If Jak performs any actions other than walking while in the lava, the lava will kill him. There is no known way to consistently perform this version of the skip, with most players citing a 1/4 or 1/5 chance of success.

<youtube>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlbKUi6xzno</youtube>
The currently listed rules for Low Eco are as follows:
<blockquote>
Beat the game as fast as possible while collecting as few eco pickups as possible.

Idle Deload
Currently, the only eco required to beat the game are the 8 on final boss (3 blue for launchers and 5 yellow. Green eco on the second phase must be avoided).
A slower but much more consistent method of skipping Klaww is by using an idle deload. If Jak visits Klaww, triggers the cutscene where Klaww smashes a rock pillar, then navigates to Boggy Swamp and performs and idle deload on a specific rock, Jak will end up respawning at the checkpoint behind Klaww. This puts Jak at the beginning of the Mountain Pass race.

<youtube>https://youtu.be/0LBw2RlE3PM?si=K8BxmnN-CzuAo24f&t=410</youtube>
If eco is accidentally collected, you may load a save file to a previous state in the game, or immediately die to return to a previous checkpoint. Otherwise, you must reset.

Variants
No restrictions with the exception of Lava Tube Skip, which is banned.
</blockquote>
Lava Tube Skip is banned in Low Eco. If it wasn't, Low Eco would be a slower and more boring version of Any%. The point of the category is to see how a runner manages to complete various tasks without the use of eco.

First Phase Klaww Skip
Some people question why Fire Canyon Skip isn't banned in Low Eco. With Lava Tube Skip banned, the runner needs to meet the 72 power cell requirement in Lava Tube. To achieve this, they will have to collect some power cells in Hub 1 levels. It would not make sense, and would be much slower, to skip Hub 1 with Fire Canyon Skip only to have to return to collect power cells.
In the lava, there are metallic platforms that, when blue eco is collected, will construct into a bridge that leads to yellow eco to fight Klaww. When in this scattered formation, the metallic platforms can still be walked on by Jak. By performing some precise movement and a boosted uppercut, it is possible to traverse on these platforms and make it to the center island without constructing the bridge. This can all be done while Klaww is in the first phase of his attacks. From here, the player is able to perform the Lava Walk skip method.

The first version of this variant involved taking damage and getting a standpoint on a pillar in the lava. The current version uses a boosted uppercut to skip having to stand on the pillar.

Category Variants
True Low Eco
The current rules for Low Eco say that the player is allowed to collect 8 necessary pieces of eco during the final boss fight. 5 yellow eco pieces to deal damage to the boss and 3 blue eco pieces to use the jump pad.

Discoveries
This, however, is not the true minimum amount of eco required to complete the game. By performing rocket uppercuts during the dark eco bomb segments, it is possible for Jak to get high enough so that when the bomb explodes, the fight does not end. This removes the requirement of the 3 blue eco pieces and brings the true required eco count down to 5.
The lava walk method was discovered by Piggleberry, Blahpy, and Sir_Jazzberry.

The idle deload method was discovered by ???.

Original Klaww Skip
Before it was known that Mountain Pass race could be completed on the zoomer without using eco, runners found a way to complete the race on foot. They would use the traditional method of first phase skip during the fight with Klaww to reach the center island. When they got there, they would take damage to get down to one health. Then, they would grab the ledge to get lava walk while at one health which would activate ghost glitch. After then walking to the Mountain Pass race, they would complete the race on foot. As long as ghost glitch was active, the race's failure cutscene would not play and Jak was free to walk to the end of the race.
Lava Walk was first used to skip Klaww by Piggleberry, blahpy & Ouiji. (January 3, 2016)

Later, Boomer performed the first idle deload method. (March 1, 2016)

First Phase
Jazz has a since deleted video of him theorising a way to get past Klaww by jumping on the underside of the boulders he shoots. He didn't manage to pull this off put it was proven possible later. Getting to the middle platform early has no benefit without the use of lava walk as well to get past Klaww, which wasn't known when Jazz made his video. (Late 2014, early 2015?)

Using the metal platforms on the right to get to the yellow eco platform may have been done before Piggleberry, but no earlier footage exists. This was done on the same day, likely earlier, that Lava Walk was discovered. (January 3, 2016)

headstrong's demonstration is the earliest recording we have of someone deliberately doing the full skip. (September 8, 2016)

Ruh's video later showed it was possible to reach the yellow eco platform by jumping on top of the boulders that Klaww shoots. (May 15, 2018)

Low eco is a speedrun category in Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy that restricts the player to using the lowest possible amount of eco needed to completed the game.

The Low Eco category is known for its utilization of difficult and unorthodox strategies and techniques that aren't found in any other category. It scrutinizes the runner's true knowledge of the game and puts their abilities to the test.

Rules

The currently listed rules for Low Eco are as follows:

Beat the game as fast as possible while collecting as few eco pickups as possible.

Currently, the only eco required to beat the game are the 8 on final boss (3 blue for launchers and 5 yellow. Green eco on the second phase must be avoided).

If eco is accidentally collected, you may load a save file to a previous state in the game, or immediately die to return to a previous checkpoint. Otherwise, you must reset.

No restrictions with the exception of Lava Tube Skip, which is banned.

Lava Tube Skip is banned in Low Eco. If it wasn't, Low Eco would be a slower and more boring version of Any%. The point of the category is to see how a runner manages to complete various tasks without the use of eco.

True Low Eco

The current rules for Low Eco say that the player is allowed to collect 8 necessary pieces of eco during the final boss fight. 5 yellow eco pieces to deal damage to the boss and 3 blue eco pieces to use the jump pad.

Other Notes

Before it was known that Mountain Pass race could be completed on the zoomer without using eco, runners found a way to complete the race on foot. They would use the traditional method of first phase skip during the fight with Klaww to reach the center island. When they got there, they would take damage to get down to one health. Then, they would grab the ledge to get lava walk while at one health which would activate ghost glitch. After then walking to the Mountain Pass race, they would complete the race on foot. As long as ghost glitch was active, the race's failure cutscene would not play and Jak was free to walk to the end of the race.
