If you plan on speedrunning Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy on PlayStation 2, it is important to you make sure that your copy of the game is unpatched. You will be able to determine whether or not your version of the game is patched or unpatched by checking the version number on the back of the disc (see Figure 1).

Reasoning

In Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, there exists a major skip called citadel skip. This skip was widely encountered by casual players who would save and load their game after entering Gol and Maia's Citadel. The load would warp Jak to the top of the citadel at the elevator entrance, allowing the player to skip all of the tasks in Gol and Maia's Citadel required to progress to the final boss. The oversight became such a common issue that Naughty Dog patched out the skip in the Greatest Hits release of the game, but not in any of the later European (PAL) releases.

Due to this patch, most speedruns of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy are performed on copies of the game that do not have the skip patched.

Not Patched

  • NTSC-U/C: Black Label Versions 1 and 2
  • PAL: All versions

Patched

  • NTSC-U/C: Black Label Version 3 and all Greatest Hits versions
  • NTSC-J: All versions

TL;DR

If you are running on NTSC-U/C, make sure your copy of the game is either Black Label Version 1 or Black Label Version 2 (Black Label meaning the black PlayStation 2 label on the cover art).
